For the first two decades after cityhood, City Springs and the Chattahoochee lived separate lives. The town square held the concerts and the farmers market. The river held the paddleboards and the picnic tables at Morgan Falls. If you wanted both in one Saturday, you drove twice.
That gap closed quietly this spring. On May 2, the City of Sandy Springs opened the first 1.88-mile segment of the Springway Trail, connecting Roswell Road to Morgan Falls Overlook Park along the river. Three months later, the August calendar has reorganized itself around that link. The events are not new in kind, but they are newly stitched together, and the way a resident spends a Saturday here is different than it was last August.

Why the SUP Showdown matters more than it sounds
A six-mile paddleboard race is, on paper, a niche event. The inaugural Sandy Springs SUP Showdown on Saturday, August 15 runs an out-and-back course on Bull Sluice Lake and the Chattahoochee, presented with Murph's Surf and the city's Recreation and Parks department, with Catalyst Sports supporting adaptive kayak athletes. Endurance sports rarely draw a crowd.
What makes this the anchor of August is not the race itself but where it sits on the map. Morgan Falls Overlook Park is now the trail's northern terminus. A resident who lives east of Roswell Road can walk or bike from home to the finish line without a car for the first time. The city has been building this connection for years. August is when it starts to pay attention to itself.
That reframes the rest of the programming, too. Tai Chi on the City Green Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 a.m., taught by Florin Szondi of the USA Chen Taiji Center, is no longer a standalone amenity. It is now the front end of a corridor that ends at the river. The Farmers Market at City Springs, Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon, is now a trailhead pantry.
The Back to School Bash is doing something specific
The Back to School Bash on Tuesday, August 4 at the City Green is the city's public safety open house in party form. Police cars, fire trucks, the mobile command center, helicopters landing on schedule, an obstacle course, refreshments. Admission is free.
Three days later, on Friday, August 7, the Heritage Amphitheatre screens The Lizzie McGuire Movie for Movies by Moonlight. The pairing is deliberate. The city built its programming so families can hit both in the same week and treat the town square as the answer to "what are we doing tonight." September 4 continues the format with Spy Kids.
For adults, the Studio Theatre runs Funny Fridays with comedian Joel Byars, age 16 and up, in a room that seats about 350. If you have not been inside the Byers Theatre next door, the 1,096-seat main hall is worth walking through even on a night you are not seeing a show. The Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center has an active August schedule with performances on the 1st, 2nd, 13th, 15th, 17th, and 21st.
The Wienermobile question
The Sandy Springs Farmers Market is running a Dog Days of Summer celebration this month, complete with an appearance by the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Rumi's is open again, and the timing is not incidental
The other reason August feels different: Rumi's Kitchen's flagship reopened on March 6 after a renovation that, in owner-chef Ali Mesghali's telling, tripled its original $3.5 million budget. The restaurant is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The new room has a 22-seat curved marble bar, plaster walls installed specifically to address the acoustic complaints of the old space, and a floor-to-ceiling mural in the private dining room by artist Dean Barger.
The menu additions matter for how you use it. Sunday brunch launched March 15, with za'atar biscuits and gravy, Turkish eggs, and shakshuka. Pastry chef Sohrob Esmaili, whom Mesghali spent five years recruiting, added a Persian ice cream sandwich built on profiterole dough with saffron-rosewater-vanilla ice cream and clotted cream. The shish kabob is now wagyu.
None of that would matter to an August guide except that Rumi's sits inside the same City Springs district as the Farmers Market, the amphitheater, and the Studio Theatre. Kaiser's Chophouse, the collaboration between Peter Kaiser and Kevin Rathbun, and The Select, the French-influenced brasserie next to the Performing Arts Center, round out the walkable dinner options. For the first time in a while, you can plan a Saturday that starts with paddleboards and ends with a wagyu shish kabob without moving your car after 11:00 a.m.
One Saturday, built end to end
Here is what the connection actually gets you on August 15:
- 8:30 a.m. Coffee and a pastry at the Farmers Market on the City Green.
- 9:15 a.m. Drive or bike north to Morgan Falls Overlook Park for the SUP Showdown start.
- Midday. Watch the six-mile finish come in off the Chattahoochee.
- 1:30 p.m. Return via the Springway segment on foot or bike.
- 4:00 p.m. Nap. This is the honest part of the itinerary.
- 7:00 p.m. Dinner at Rumi's, The Select, or Kaiser's Chophouse, all within a five-minute walk of the amphitheater.
- Later. If Funny Fridays or a Sandy Springs PAC show lands on the date you are reading, the Studio Theatre is one block from your table.
You could have done a version of this in August 2025. You would have driven three separate times and pieced it together yourself. That is the shift.
Looking a few weeks out
The Blue Stone Arts & Music Festival returns to Sandy Springs on September 25 and 26, in its fourth year, with more than 60 artists in the market and headliners including Nicotine Dolls and Allen Stone. The Kids Zone and two music stages will occupy the same footprint August is using now for the Bash and the movies. If August is when the corridor first works, September is when the city tests it at scale.

Mercedes-Benz is centralizing its North American headquarters at its Sandy Springs facility by August 2026, relocating up to 500 jobs to Fulton County.
